Meditation and mindfulness are practices of self-reflection that seem especially relevant for our lives today. These contemplative traditions teach us to focus on our moment-to-moment experience non-judgmentally. We are instructed to pause, breathe and look deeply into our minds, bodies and emotions.
Sometimes we have trouble paying attention because we worry about the past or the future. We can be hard on ourselves, critical of our efforts or appearance, or we may judge others harshly. We love our family and friends, but can find ourselves in conflict with them. Sometimes we just feel stressed out and overwhelmed.
Meditation reveals a still, quiet place inside us, where we can experience rejuvenation and calm. We begin to recognize negative attitudes or reactive patterns of thought that derail our happiness. Meditation and mindfulness reconnect us to our bodies, our senses and each other.
Through this process, we develop a greater awareness of ourselves – how we think, feel and act.
